A solenoid is basically an electromagnet: they are made from a large coil of copper wire with a metal plunger in the middle. When the coil is energized, the metal center moves in the coil. This makes the solenoid capable of pulling from one end and thanks to the springs return to the initial position if the feed is removed.
Selenoid-electromagnetic push-pull 12Vdc electromagnet with normally open, spring return, normally the mechanism is extended, when it is fed it retracts, and if it stops giving current it returns to the initial position thanks to the spring.
Ideal for small automation systems.
